Most patients can return to their normal daily activities 3 months after surgery and are able to lead a comfortable and healthy life

Diet & Nutrition

There are no dietary or any other restrictions post-transplant. Eating properly is an important part of the recovery process, and a healthy and balanced diet is an essential requisite.

Exercise

It is important to have daily exercise routine to build up your muscles weakened by a long of illness. Playing sports and exercising frequently is possible after 3 months although it is advisable to avoid contact sports such as boxing, karate, rock climbing etc. for 6 months.

Driving

Driving can be resumed in about 2 months after surgery. Most patients can undertake occasional train/plane travel in 2-3 months.

Alcohol

Alcoholic beverages are not recommended. Alcohol is broken down by the liver and can cause damage of the newly transplanted liver.

Smoking is harmful for the liver & also to everyone's health.

Sexual Activity/ Pregnancy

There are no restrictions on sexual activity and these may be resumed when one feels comfortable. The majority of men regain their potency and most women find that their menstrual cycle returns to normal a few months after the operation.

Many men have successfully fathered children after transplantation, and a large number of women have given birth to healthy children. However, women should not conceive for up to 6 months after donation and 12 months after transplantation. For recipients, use of oral contraceptives and hormones should be done in consultation with the hepatologist.
