What does the Liver do?
The Liver is situated in the upper right part of 'tummy'(abdomen). It has nearly 400 functions in the body. These include;
Cleanses blood
- Metabolising alcohol and other drug and chemicals.
- Neutralising and destroying poisonous substances.
Regulation of body fuel supply
- Producing, storing and supplying quick energy (glucose) to keep the mind alert and the body active.
- Producing and storing fat.
Manufacturing essential body proteins involved in
- Clotting of blood.
- Providing resistance of infection.
Regulates the balance of many hormones
- Sex hormones.
- Thyroid hormones.
- Steroid hormones.
Regulates body Cholesterol
- Produces Cholesterol and converts it to other essential substance.
Regulates the supply of essential vitamins and minerals
- Iron
- Copper
- B12
- Folic acid
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin K
Production of bile
- Which passes from the liver to the gut and helps in digestion of food.
